This Colt Ace was shipped September 21st, 1931 to the United States Government in a 12 gun shipment.  The slide to this pistol is number 6257.  That pistol shipped to the Supply Officer at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on December 4th, 1935 in a separate 12 gun shipment.  This pistol would have originally left the Colt factory with a number matching slide.

Often times armorers would disassemble a batch of pistols, do a mass cleaning and then re-assemble.  This is often times the case where it has been observed that slides on early M1911A1's are a few digits off of the serial number on the frame.

This pistol does bear the inspector mark "GWA" on the left side trigger guard.  It is believed that this is the inspection mark of Col. George A. Woody who was believed to be stationed at Springfield Armory during this time period.
