This Colt Government Model was shipped to the China & Japan Trading Company in New York, New York on March 31st, 1927 in a 100 gun shipment. The factory letter states that this pistol was Factory Engraved "Shanghai Pol. No. 295 on the right side of the receiver". It also states that the special features were furnished with a smooth slide and receiver.
The Colt's that the SMP ordered during this period were heavily utilized during active duty and training. The finish and wear on this pistol is an example of one that was well used and worn and refinished possibly multiple times.
The Shanghai Municipal Police was the police force of the Shanghai Municipal Council which governed the Shanghai International Settlement between 1854 and 1943, when the settlement was retroceded to Chinese control.
