This Colt .38 AMU Automatic Pistol was shipped to the Ordnance Property Officer, Building 371 of Fort Sam Houston, Texas on June 30th, 1961 in a 30 gun shipment.  The factory letter states that these were Furnished as disassembled kits.  This was one of 30 pistols delivered to the military as a complete kit.  The subsequent AMU pistols were kits without receivers.

This particular pistol is listed in Jenkins’ book U.S. Military Match And Marksmanship Automatic Pistols.  This pistol is listed by the specific serial number and details that a very small number of these bullseye pistols, including this one, were shipped with receivers so the AMU gunsmith could assemble guns on site.

Later examples were shipped as slide kits only, regular Government Model receivers were used to complete the gun.  It is believed that this gun was operated and owned by Captain Lew Sharp, the head of the AMU Team at Fort Benning in 1962. This example escaped a .38 Special Wadcutter conversion, a fate that was dealt to many of these fine bullseye shooters.
