This Colt M1911A1 was originally shipped to the Transportation Officer at Springfield Armory in December of 1943.
At some point in this Colt's life it was transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal where it would be cut away and refinished. Similar pistols have been observed with these same types of modifications and would be used for training on how the M1911A1 pistol functions and how all of the parts cycle within the pistol.
The moving parts within the receiver and the slide are cut away so the pistol can be cycled to be able to see all parts work. Even the magazine and 7 cartridges were skeletonized for this example.
