This Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless is a middle of the type 1 variants.  It features Colt's high polish blue finish with fire blue small parts.  Note the longer slide with the 4" barrel and separate barrel bushing.   Plunge milled slide serrations with the early "Browning's Patent" roll mark on the slide.

This particular 1903 was shipped to the Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company in Chicago, Illinois on May 18th, 1905 in a 100 gun shipment.

This pistol also features the early type 1 hard rubber grips with the scalloped edges around the Colt logo.  The thumb safety also has a retaining screw on the right side of the frame.  The thumb safety screw was the first main change in development of the model M.  It occurred before the end of the first year of production.  On Dec. 12th 1903 a directive was issued requiring a retaining screw to be placed in the reverse side of the thumb safety.  This addition turned out to be somewhat problematic in that the screw tended to work loose and fall out due to the up and down nature operation of the safety.  The screw was eventually eliminated again in late 1911.
