This Colt 1908 Pocket Hammerless shipped to E.A. Sykes in China For: SMP (Shanghai Municipal Police) on June 20th, 1929 in a 600 gun shipment. Special features state that "2054" was assigned to this pistol.
The right side of the slide is marked "Shanghai Municipal Police" along with No 2054. You also see 2054 on the barrel and slide. SMP pistols had a unique lanyard loop on the left side near the magazine catch release.
The Colt's that the SMP ordered during this period were heavily utilized during active duty and training. The finish and wear on this pistol is an example of one that was well used and worn and refinished possibly multiple times.
The Shanghai Municipal Police was the police force of the Shanghai Municipal Council which governed the Shanghai International Settlement between 1854 and 1943, when the settlement was retroceded to Chinese control.
