This Colt M1911 was shipped to the Bush Terminal in Brooklyn, NY on October 3rd, 1918. This pistol is what collectors refer to as a "Black Army" finish. The black finish was caused by rough surface preparation and is known to flake off prematurely.
This particular 1911 has the large roll mark on the right hand side of "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY". The United States Property at this point is still on the left side dust cover. Later in production this would move to the right hand side above the serial number.
